Four tortoises and a hare need your help

September 07 2016

hull marathon team 2016

Following too few months of training, on Sunday 18th September I shall be running the Hull Marathon with a worthy team that includes four tortoises (of which I am one) and a hare (that’s my daughter, Lucy).

Joking aside, we’re attempting to raise some much-needed funds that can truly make a difference to the little known charity called GAIN.

My good friend, Paul Waine was diagnosed with Gullian-Barré syndrome in 2008 and you can read his full story here. This acute disorder of the peripheral nerves, often proceeded by a simple respiratory infection, affects 1,200 people in the UK every year. The result can be severe pain, paralysis (usually temporary) and many months of rehabilitation. It can affect otherwise healthy individuals, most commonly aged between 30 and 50 years.

GAIN (Gullian-Barré and Associated Inflammatory Neuropathies) is the charity that works to support and undertake research into this acute condition and by drawing attention to this less widely known charity, we hope to be able to provide it with a decent donation, once we’ve all nursed our aching limbs after the 18th September. The marathon team includes myself, my brother Richard, my friend Paul Waine, our physio Sam Havler and of course my daughter, Lucy.

If you would like to support our fundraising efforts, please visit our Just Giving web page to make a donation or send us a cheque made payable to WJ Components Ltd. However small, it will make a difference to better understanding this horrific condition that could affect any of us. Thank you in anticipation of your support.

Yours sincerely
